Maintaining a Minimalist Aesthetic

Maintaining a Minimalist Aesthetic

December 02, 2019

Fashionista and minimalist don’t often go hand in hand.

Why? Because most people believe that in order to be on point with fashion, you need to acquire the most up to date looks to stay relevant. But really, to stay relevant, one must edit, edit, edit. And a great place to start is in your closet.

Here are my tips for keeping your life germane:

Buy the classics and have them custom-tailored.

Your basics will never go out of style. Most everyone has a pair of jeans, white (or other solid t-shirts, black trousers, white (or other solid) button-down shirt, a little black dress, and a blazer/jacket. Now make sure they all fit properly. Taking extra care of how your clothes fit creates a better relationship with those items, you will wear them more and it will eliminate the need to repurchase or replace.

If you’re making sure to stay on-trend, do so minimally.

That is if neons are suddenly back in style or there is a surge in animal print, choose a hair accessory or clutch purse to invoke the tendency. No need to buy a completely new list of clothing items.

Re-sale and vintage are part of my minimalist practice.

I regularly trim down my wardrobe items and sell them to consignment stores. I also allow myself to replace those items (only) with a “new” (consigned) piece to add freshness to my exhibiting closet.

Some things are free AND take up zero space.

A good attitude and posture speak volumes of how you are feeling on the inside and portraying on the outside. Your outfit instantly looks better when you’re head is held high and your smile is shining bright.
