Hats are more than just an accessory, it’s the third piece!

December 18, 2018

Most people wear a top (1 piece) and a bottom (2nd piece). I describe it as a flat piece of paper. But when you add a third piece, it pops off the page. You now have a 3rd dimension and you’ve now created an interesting outfit. Hats create a instant 3rd dimension and it doesn’t require you to actually wear anything. In other words, if you run hot or prefer a minimalist look, you don’t actually have to add a layer to your body. When styling men and women I’m constantly making them aware of the notion that lots of 2 piece outfits are boring. You become invisible in a sea of 2 piece-wearing people. Adding the third piece adds texture, layers, and visual interest. Hats add all of these extras plus provides you a health benefit of protecting your head and face! Boom!

Here are the rules to wearing hats:

  1. Don’t mix summer straw hats with winter outfits. Vise versa, don’t wear a felt hat in the summer. Keep light materials for warm weather and heavy materials for cold climates.
  2. Your hat must be subdued. No crazy patterns, fluffy bows or feathers (unless it’s very small/subtle).
  3. Keep your hat to a neutral color. Black, tan, grey are all good choices.
  4. Keep casual hats away from formal attire: no straw hats for evening events or weddings or foe men, light fedoras with a tux, etc.
  5. Only wear hats that are in good condition. Plainly, a ratty old hat or soiled/sweaty baseball cap cause more (visual) harm than good.
